Have you ever felt like you had a cold that just wouldn’t go away? It seems like the discolored nasal drainage and blockage just keeps hanging on. There is a good chance you are suffering from sinusitis (an infection or inflammation of the sinuses). Approximately 1 in 8 adults come down with sinusitis each year.
Sinusitis Symptoms
- Symptoms include: Stuffy, congested, or blocked nose
- Pain or pressure, in the face, head, or around the eyes
- Cold symptoms that last longer than usual
- Symptoms that do not improve within 2-3 weeks of getting sick, or initially get better but worsen again
Many cases of sinus infections resolve on their own and do not require a doctors visit. But, sometimes symptoms persist far longer than usual. In such cases, you may wish to be seen.
Treatment
Once diagnosed, treatment depends on whether or not your sinusitis is caused by a virus or bacteria. The majority of cases are viral and should not be treated with antibiotics. Instead, pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, over the counter decongestant and steroid preparations, or salt water rinses of the nose are suggested. But, be sure to check with your doctor before beginning treatment.
Emergency Symptoms
If the following occur, please seek immediate emergency medical attention
- Intense sweating
- Horrible chills
- Inability to or difficulty breathing
