A new year is knocking at the door. Some years are more memorable than others as it reminds us of all the beautiful experiences and good times spent with loved ones. 2021 wasn’t like anything we have experience before. It was preceded by global events that turned our lives upside down, and to get through it, we went through a range of emotions – sadness, anxiety, depression, loss, loneliness, and a bit of cheer, comfort, and happiness. Our resolutions this year can change a lot and we’re ready to get started with you!
If there is a big lesson the past year has taught us, it is to never take life for granted. We now do things with more intention and cherish the moments of each day. There couldn’t be a better time to start afresh than the coming year.
What do your New Year’s resolutions say about your vision for the future?
How Many Americans Make New Year’s Resolutions?
In 2021, an estimated 188.9 million adult population mentioned that they are confident learning something new or making a lifestyle change to better themselves which is a 15.17% increase over last year. Health, money, career, self-improvement, love, and family are the top six categories for making life changes. The numbers are promising. (Choi 2020)
How Do I Stick to My Resolutions?
Let’s admit it; we are as quick in leaving our resolutions midway as we are in making them every year. We tend to take it casually despite the tradition being a part of our culture for over 4000 years, starting with the ancient Babylonians making annual promises to their gods.
This year let’s start with resolutions that are not overarching. Set achievable goals and work one at a time. Write them down and break these goals into small milestones.
To help emphasize old commitments and grab new opportunities in 2022, here are ten resolutions to consider.
1. Don’t ignore your mental health
The brain is a part of our bodies, yet we often forget to care for our mental health. Mental illness can disrupt daily lives and lead to many physical health issues, so taking care of it is essential. Drink plenty of fluid, eat a balanced diet, and include a fitness regime of your interest like walking, running, or bicycling. And don’t forget to stay in touch with loved ones and speak to them frequently. Human connections are good for our mental health.
2. Prioritize your financial planning
We know more than ever that life is unpredictable, and we must be prepared for the unexpected. It’s a smart move to work on your financial security – managing debts, assessing household spends, growing cash flow, and increasing your savings. It’s a process that takes time; stay dedicated throughout the year.
3. Stop the negative self-talk
Work through your emotions to stop the negative thoughts from coming to your mind. Having a planned day keeps you busy and motivated. Start your day with a positive affirmation. Affirmations are statements or phrases that help you gently replace the negative thoughts in your head with more positive ones. According to the Law of Attraction, you manifest whatever you think about.
4. Declutter your home and workspace
Our personal space and work-life have intertwined amid the pandemic. It’s even more vital today to declutter the space around us. Improved productivity, focus, and hygiene are some of the significant benefits of removing unwanted things from your home.
5. Follow a self-care routine
Take time out to do things that improve your physical health and mental health. Self-care is your energy booster. Even minor changes like sleeping on time, practicing gratitude, learning to say “no” to unimportant things, and staying positive make a big difference.
6. Restart a past hobby
Revive your old hobby and get some “me-time”. You will be surprised by how much joy it brings. Do memory joggers, find out what did you loved doing in your pastime, and give yourself a 21-day challenge to stick to it. These small joys boost your confidence and help you find a new perspective on life.
7. Learn a new skill
The pandemic has opened up tons of opportunities to learn a new skill. Let’s think of the most successful people around us; they are always keen to hone a new craft and grow. Make a list of things you want to learn and prioritize. Just start; you’ll instinctively know what to do next on your list. Give yourself a renewed sense of confidence.
8. Invest in meaningful relationships
Communication is the key. The people you surround yourself with are an indication of the life you want to live. It is easy to be attracted to things that won’t matter in the long run. Make an effort to instead build your future with people interested in your growth and well-being.
9. Save enough and plan a once-in-a-lifetime trip
Need we say more. Bring out your adventurous side and gift yourself a trip you won’t forget. Visualize yourself in this place. Create a vision board of magazine cut outs of your dream destination be it a tropical island or mountain retreat.
10. Most importantly, share your goals
Sharing your plans and goals with friends or family and reviewing them from time to time will help you stay focused throughout the year. By including those you love in your dreams, it’s easier to see them through.
We wish you a happy and healthy new year, full of promise and the practice of being intentional about what matters to you in your life. We can’t wait to see the new you!
